Countess of Wessex

Excited children at a village primary school welcomed a very special visitor when The Countess of Wessex officially opened the new Bishop Ian Ramsey C of E Primary School building, in Medomsley, near Consett.

After touring the new building she met children and staff before unveiling a plaque in the school hall.

During her visit The Countess also watched a short performance by pupils taken from the school’s end of year production Oliver Twist.

The school, on Manor Road, Medomsley, was rebuilt during 2007 and 2008 at a cost of  £4.3 million.

Headteacher Peter Boyle said: “We’re all very excited about The Countess of Wessex coming to open our school. It’s a very special event not just for the school but for the whole village.

Following the unveiling of the plaque, year six pupils Lewis Oxley, 10, and Mirrin Henderson, 11,  presented the Countess with a gift – a carved cross taken from wood from the school woodland – and reception class pupil Lauren Vinton, five, presented a posy of flowers.

The royal visitor was also at Finchale Training College near Durham to mark the opening of the College’s newly refurbished residential accommodation.

The College, a charity which provides vocational training for unemployed disabled adults to enable them to gain and retain permanent employment, has been redeveloping its residential accommodation since October 2008.

This project has cost in the region of £650,000 and has been partly funded by various charitable trusts and organisations.
