Murton House Mews has been developed by local company, M&T Developments in conjunction with Sunderland based Carbon Logix, a specialist company that uses a revolutionary building system to provide highly energy efficient properties.
The Mews comprises ten properties, ranging from two bedroom apartments to four bedroom semi-detached homes, all of which boast features that enable massive energy saving for their residents.
These include rainwater recycling and exhaust air heat pumps which work by extracting air from warm areas such as kitchens and bathrooms, and removing the heat to be used elsewhere in the property.
This will enable occupiers to reduce their energy bills by as much as 60% compared to those of traditionally built properties of the same size.
Director of Carbon Logix Steve Lenehan said,”The key to the process is a unique building system that is based on polystyrene and concrete. We don’t use traditional bricks and mortar. The result is an airtight shell that offers superb thermal efficiences, and this combined with other energy saving features like air heat pumps means that these homes are kept very warm very cheaply. Our homes are also highly affordable starting at just under £100,000 for a two bedroomed apartment, so buyers are assured of real value for money from the day they purchase the property.”
John Cummings MP commented,”It’s great to see two local companies working so hard to provide new homes that will run on significantly less energy than traditional properties. The government has made it clear that by 2016 all new homes constructed must be carbon zero in terms of their energy emissions,so it is very encouraging that both M&T Developments and Carbon Logix are demonstrating that this is possible”.
Councillor Alan Napier lives near the site and has watched the progression of the development from day one.
“It is fantastic that we have one of the most sustainable new homes developments anywhere in the UK here in the North East of England. It is hoped that one day all new properties will operate this way, with enviromental considerations a priority. To see two local companies paving the way showing how it can be done right now is remarkable”,he said.
Director of Carbon Logix Matthew Thoburn added.”We are now able to use Murton House Mews as a great showcase to demonstrate what can be achieved, and we are looking forward to developing our business with the public sector”.
