Consett author Anthony Pickup with his latest novel 'Darkness - The corruption of Sarah Jane'.

Warehouseman turned writer Anthony Pickup has penned his own success story after his talents were snapped up by a New York publishing house.

His first book, a period thriller entitled Darkness – the corruption of Sarah Jane, has now gone on sale via major on-line book sites such as Amazon and W H Smith.

Anthony, who gave up his job to become a full-time carer for his wife Julie after she had suffered a stroke, turned to writing when he found he had time on his hands.

Cyclists power through Edmundbyers village during the Tour of the Reservoir race

BRITISH CYCLING’S MOST popular race didn’t disappoint at the weekend.

The gruelling 86-mile event Tour of the Reservoir, sponsored by Northumbrian Water, covers an energy sapping seven laps of Derwent reservoir and tested the skill and endurance of almost 100 competitors.

It was 23-year-old Andy Tennant of the Halfords Barn team who crossed the finishing line first picking up a winner’s cheque for £500.

As the race sprints to its 25th anniversary next year it has become the British Cycling Federation race that attracts more entries than any other with riders and spectators contributing a welcome windfall for the local economy.

Organised and hosted by the Tyne Valley Cycling Club the event drew crowds of up to 15000 this year. Race organiser Michael Hodgson said: “This is one of the top races in the country and we are always oversubscribed. It is a very tough course set against the beautiful backdrop of the reservoir and we were very pleased with the way things went this year.
