A massive investment in secondary school education in County Durham has moved a step closer as councillors named preferred sites for three new academies. Members of Durham County Council’s Cabinet met to agree the preferred sites for academies in the Consett, Stanley and Durham City areas.

The development of academies will bring tens of millions of pounds of investment and new school facilities that will offer young people outstanding educational opportunities.

Council awarded £5 million to improve public transport

Major bus routes in County Durham are to benefit from a £5 million improvement programme.

Durham County Council has been awarded government funding for the scheme – called Transit 15 – which will help to strengthen the county’s public transport network, reduce traffic congestion and enable people to enjoy better access to jobs and leisure opportunities.

Stanley drugs swoop nets £100,000 of cannabis plants


Cannabis with a street value in excess of £100,000 and several thousand pounds in cash was seized by police who raided two houses in Stanley at the weekend.

The operation, on Friday night, saw houses in Slaidburn Road and Beaconsfield Street targeted.

Three local men aged 25, 28 and 29 were arrested. They are currently on police bail pending further inquiries.

A £5,000 reward is being offered by the charity Crimestoppers as the hunt for the attackers of a frail retired doctor is stepped up.

The brutal assault inflicted on 92-year-old Dr William Benson was recently featured on BBC’s Crimewatch programme.
